Remember the days of the middle school cafeteria swap? A chocolate pudding for a fruit roll-up? PB & J for ham and cheese? These days, grown-ups are getting into the action by swapping clothing, DVD’s, books – even plants – instead of spending money on brand new items. The Chicago Tribune takes a look inside these modern swap meets and explores the phenomenon behind this new (or old-fashioned) way of commerce.
Just like when you were a kid, you must have something to trade before you can take something. And no cash changes hands. You may think your items are outdated or slightly boring, but in the eyes of a fellow swapper, they may be just the ticket. Your household junk becomes newfound treasure. Organized locally or online, swap meets offer Savers a chance to clean out unwanted clutter and revamp closets, book collections or gardens. It’s the cafeteria swap all over again.

Nice Post, Thanks.
How well I remember the days of “Swap Ya For It! “… LOL!
Mainly back then, the cause for exchanges was for marbles or some other desirable toy or trinket, then as I reached the ripe old age of 6, swaps were made for more serious stuff, such as a smooch from the “hottest girl” in the schoolyard at recess.
These days, the need for co-operative trading and bartering have taken on a more urgent tone, as we small business folks seek to survive the pains and constrictions of a persistant and spreading financial recession. As we consumers become more and more cash strapped, the decisions of where to buy or save are at the fore-front of our thoughts and family discussions.
Small businesses, and micro-enterprises, certainly might think more in such terms, as we must learn to act together co-operatively, instead of embracing the needless “cut-throat competitiveness ” that has been the downfall of Big Business, and the “Good Old Days “.
We now have bridges, circles and networks that might bring us all together for the noble activities of education, support, friendship, barter and survival.
If you wanna see how we actually can work our way through these recessionary times with a measure of “Graceful Sanity” as our reward. Please don’t hesitate to visit my website and leave a message or two…
And for those of you who are having a less than pleasant day, I always have a few extra Good Days on hand… Wanna Swap?
