School’s out, but there’s no summer break for most of us. Have you thought about vacation? Entertaining the kids? Affording it this year? Take a deep breath, we’ve got you covered. Most families have cut down on summer travel this year, and we’ve put together a few ideas to shave off some extra expenses as you figure out a way to go on at least a roadtrip or two.
Go camping.
Okay, city-slickers. Don’t turn up those noses just yet. Today’s campgrounds offer many of the creature comforts of home. Or you weekend warriors can rough it if that’s your thing. No matter where you live, there’s a nice spot to set up camp – within an hour’s drive or so. You’ll save on gas, hotel costs, meals, etc. And you’ll get to have some QT with the family in a peaceful, outdoorsy setting.
Plan a house swap.
Live near the beach, mountains or cool city? Search online for another family willing to trade houses for a week. Stock up with groceries and board games, hit the road and leave the mad money for the boardwalk, the movies, mini-golf. Or not.
“Travel” nearby.
Plan a trip to a free museum or historic site near your home. Hit the junk shops next county over. Or try that new tapas restaurant on the trendy side of town. Stay away from places in your daily routine, and try to look at your city from a tourist perspective. You’ll save on gas, airfare and hotel rooms, and get to know your own backyard a bit.
So, how do you save money when making summer travel plans?

I save money on summer travel by combining my vacations with friends & family members. Meaning when we do a week at the shore instead of getting a place that just sleeps my family we combine families- reducing the overall cost and making the trip more exciting for everyone!
