We all know that the money we bring in (income) minus the money we pay out (expenses) leaves us with the money we have left for saving and spending. And the more we can shrink everyday expenses – household bills, gas for the car, etc. – the more money we can park in our savings or spend on the things we love.
We’ve heard a lot of great tips and ideas on how to reduce expenses and shrink our bills over the years. Here are a few of our favorites:
Don’t stick to the fixed plan. Check the bills you consider fixed expenses (like cable and cell phone bills) and see how much of your plan or package you’re really using. If you’re not using something on the plan, call and have it adjusted.
Know what’s on sale and when. Shop in the off-season for seasonal stuff, it’ll save you a bundle. Buy in bulk and take advantage of weekly coupon clippings.
Drive smart. Drive with your windows down on the way home from work. And don’t rev your engine at stoplights. It’s annoying and it wastes gas.
Be family friendly. Instead of going out to dinner with the family, rent a movie from your local library and stay in for the night.
We want to hear from you, Saver. How do you save money on bills or cut down on expenses? Do tell.

Here is a thought we are considering: We have two vehicles but figured we don’t always need both. We can live with a little inconvenience for awhile. We found out we can “store” one vehicle and drastically reduce the insurance we pay on it. Storing means you won’t drive the vehicle but leave it in the garage. Our insurance company says we can store on a month by month basis. If we decide to take out of storage, it must be for at least a month. Similarly, when we put it in storage it must be for at least a month. See if your insurance company allows this. We found we can realize a substantial insurance savings.
No more designer clothes, no more shopping at marked up department stores. I may not look as sharp without the new duds, but now I have more money to save up. I also eat out a lot less, and when I do, its the dollar menu at McD’s or Jack in the Box.
by ascetic self denial and sometimes “pummeling” my body if need be, lol. j/k
