Celebrate Freedom: nationally and financially.

This weekend, we’re celebrating our nation’s freedom (how it’s July already, we don’t know). We’ve decided, in the spirit of our nation’s independence, to pass along some stars-and-stripes patriotic money-saving ideas for this weekend. You didn’t think we’d forget about our financial freedom, did you?

If you’re the lucky host of a backyard bash, don’t feel like you have to fund an extravaganza. Shop the supermarket sales this week to collect hot dogs, hamburgers and rolls (and check the web and circulars for coupons). Keep costs low by asking friends and family to bring a dish. Who doesn’t love a good potluck? Steer clear of decorations you’ll end up throwing away at the end of the day. Round up the kids and put them to work on homemade art projects.

Remember, you aren’t obligated to open up your house to everyone you know. A get-together at a local park, pond or pool may be more fun, and less of a financial burden on you and your family. For some freebies, search online or the local paper to see what your city or town is offering. Parades, fireworks, street fairs and other celebrations are usually free and always family friendly. Check for cheap or free historical sites in your area, like the Liberty Bell or a battlefield reenactment.

While spending time with friends and family celebrating our Nation’s freedom this 4th, take a minute to remember your financial freedom. Wave your flag high, ooh and aah at the fireworks display and give a “hip, hip, hooray” for all the money you saved. Talk about independence.
